THE WORKSHOPWho we are, and what we do
Series Magic is an independent Series Land Rover specialist workshop based in Melbourne, Australia. We were established in 2021 and work exclusively on Series 1, 2, 2a and 3 Land Rovers built between 1948 and 1985 — the leaf-sprung, drum-braked, hand-built vehicles that came before the Defender.
We help maintain Melbourne's Series fleet and also take work from country Victoria and interstate. Our work runs from servicing and minor repairs through to engine and gearbox rebuilds, structural repairs, and patina restorations.
Fig. 01 — Series Magic workshop, Melbourne. We’re here to help get Series Land Rovers back on the road and keep them on the road (and off-road). We help maintain Melbourne’s Series fleet, but we also work on Series based in country Victoria and interstate. We do everything from servicing and minor repairs to engine and gearbox rebuilds, structural repairs, and Series restorations.
We are increasingly focused on maintaining and restoring Series in a way that restores structural and mechanical integrity without erasing history and individuality, such as the charm and character embodied in faded paintwork and minor panel imperfections.

SCOPEWhat we work on
We work on every Series Land Rover variant built between 1948 and 1985 — petrol and diesel, short and long wheelbase, station wagon, hardtop, soft top and pickup.
Common configurations and the work we do most often on each:
Series I · 1948–5880″, 86″, 88″, 107″, 109″. Engine, gearbox and transfer case rebuilds; electrical and patina-respecting structural work.
Series II · 1958–6188″ and 109″. All standard mechanical and electrical work, including 2.0 and 2.25 engine rebuilds.
Series IIa · 1961–71The most common Series we see. 88″ and 109″ in every body style. Servicing through to full mechanical rebuild.
Series III · 1971–8588″ and 109″, including the late SIII and the 2.6 litre six-cylinder variants.
What we don’t work on
We don't work on Counties, Perenties, Discovery models or Defenders. We also don't undertake V8 or 4BD1 engine rebuilds, LT95 gearbox rebuilds, or coil-spring, disc-brake or power-steering conversions of Series vehicles.
These boundaries exist for a reason — we'd rather do a narrower range of work properly than dilute the workshop's competence. We're happy to recommend trusted specialists for work outside our scope.
§ 3.0
APPROACHHow we approach the work
We work methodically and with care, aiming to do the job properly rather than rushing it out of the workshop. We set an uncompromisingly high standard for work on safety-critical systems — brakes, steering, suspension, structural repairs, and high-current electrical circuits. We either do it properly or we don't touch it.
We insist on fitting only high-quality replacement parts where it matters most (safety-critical and reliability-critical systems, parts and assemblies). Elsewhere on a Series, we may fit less costly replacement parts—if obtainable—at the customer’s request, provided they still meet our minimum workshop standards.
Quality control, job documentation, standardised workshop procedures and continuous improvement are an important part of how we work.
Series can be anything but straightforward to work on. We often discover more things that need doing as the work proceeds, and there can be unforeseeable complications. We're committed to clear communication and transparency about any complications that arise and the options to address them — including their cost implications — before we proceed.
Estimates over quotes
Most work runs on an estimate or our workshop hourly rate. Quoting is the exception — Series work too often reveals things only an open inspection can see. When we do quote, conditions are spelled out.
Documented work
Significant jobs come with photos, notes, and a written summary of what we found and what we did. It's how we keep our own records honest, and it's part of what you're paying for.

PEOPLEThe team in the workshop
Series Magic is a small workshop, intentionally. The people who answer the phone, quote your job, work on your vehicle, and put their tools away at the end of the day are the same people.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENTSolving Series problems at the bench
A workshop that takes Series Land Rovers seriously regularly encounters three problems: aftermarket parts with major quality issues, parts that are no longer obtainable at any price, and design limitations baked into vehicles drawn up in the late 1940s.
We continually develop and test workshop-based solutions to these problems. Our R&D solutions include specialist tools, modified parts and workshop-developed techniques, procedures and refinements. We offer a growing range of these solutions as specialised products and services that can be ordered or purchased via this website.
